Tattoos are rare in Japan
Getting inked is either a sign of being a real outsider/ rebel or being a member of organized crime.
I have seen some amazing body art…but it is a real commitment. It seems to be all or nothing…full body, or hidden, or nothing.
The little tattoo on the ankle could create problems here.
I have heard stories of westerners being deigned access or asked to leave fitness clubs and onsennnes due to ink,
This is all anecdotal but I understand it is slowly changing but as most cultural changes, slowly is the operative word –
