How important is it to “get the shot”
I am mostly a studio shooter who is doing street shooting for fun.
There are many times where I see a great shot, that I do not take.
The invasion of privacy and jamming my lens into peoples personal space keeps me from bringing the camera up to my face.
As an example the homeless in Tokyo are very interesting. They seem to have a dignity that is lacking in other destitute people I have met in my life.
I have taken images of some of their ” homes” but not of them.
I have seen other tourists who took the shots, and I could see the pain it caused on the persons face…. Subtle, but it was there.
Was that shot worth the pain it caused?
As a photographer I thought ” What a great shot” as a person I thought ” what an asshole that photographer was”
My plan is to learn more of the language and culture, and then see about showing the dignity and respect, with their co-operation and consent.
I guess, to me, it is more important to not be considered by anyone to be the asshole photographer then to get the shot.
