I have been watching Japanese television…. Something that I had not done a lot of before.
I don’t understand.
Not just the language but why is going on.
I leave it to my housemates to choose what to watch, and what seems to be popular in my house is a comedy/ variety/ public affairs type show.
The basic format…. Bright colours…. Panel of “guests”… Studio audience ( though sometimes you don’t see them so the sounds could be dubbed in)
The conversation between members of the panel are almost always subtitled… In Japanese.
Not the boring subtitles you see on a foreign movie… But colourful, big fonts, small fonts… Serious fonts or comic fonts, depending on what the subject is.
Why the subtitles?
Don’t know.
I have a theory, but I will wait until I ask a few more people before I post it.
I like isubtitles because it is helping me learn.
As well as the live action, they will cut away to clips… But in the corner you will likely see the face of one of the panel reacting to the clip, like they are there with you, and you can hear audience and the panels reactions…. It can be comedy bit, or it can be a heat warming bit about someone’s loss in the earthquake. They will cut between panel members… so you sometimes see a nose wipe or some other reaction ( never seen a yawn..yet). When the clip is over they come back to the panel and ( I assume) talk about it, or set up the next bit.
Commercials are 15 seconds long.
Trying to tell a story or sell a product in 15 seconds…. Their ad copy writers have it down to a fine art.
I have been told a lot of ads have been pulled because of the earthquake, so some public service ads and ads of strength and condolence are playing.
There are a couple that really pull at the heartstrings…. –
