What I ending up doing this year was walk in the parade.  I choose a group that would provide some interaction with the crowd ( U of T’s Samba band) and I spent most of the time shooting the crowds lining the street.  Here is a link to my images… there are many of them…if you are not a people watcher, they might be boring.

I started watching other photographers, looking at what they were shooting, ( priorities naked ladies, naked guys, queens, costumes, celebrities, )

There were a lot of bad images created… (I know I created my share )
One of the things that struck me is the number of shooters ( media and people with expensive cameras) who were on the wrong side of the street. As the day wore on they would be shooting straight into the sun.  I love using the sun as a back light, but in an event like this, it seems like a recipe for disaster. The TV guys got it right.

I guess the point if this ramble is, when you go to photograph an event, think about the light… The light you have at the beginning of the event, and how it will change.
