Leave your camera at home!

Being the spouse of a photographer must be a real drag… out for a nice walk and the photographer wants to stop every few minutes to create a shot.  ” This light is great I just need to move a bit and get one more.  Just another minute I need to change lens” Arrrrrgh… I will see you later.

I see photographers who go to events who spend the entire time snapping images, from the same location, while blocking the view of other people.

When I go out someplace as a photographer, I like to work alone (or with another photographer) so I don’t have to worry about pissing off my companion.  I go to shoot which means moving to get good angles, trying to capture the mood or feel of a event… AND REALIZE THAT JUST BECAUSE I HAVE A CAMERA, OTHER PEOPLE HAVE THE SAME RIGHT AS I DO TO ENJOY THE EVENT. Haveing a camera does not give you the right to move in front of people, block their view, step on their toes or genrally make an ass of yourself!

If I am going out as a patron, I leave my (big) cameras at home… I want to enjoy the event.

I will take my g9 sometimes…but it is for snapshots, record shots of the event, not to create photographs… it will spend most of the time tucked away while I concentrate on the most important thing, enjoying the experience, sharing with my companions and having a good time.  There are times when people ask if I brought a camera, I lie and say I didn’t, because I know that bringing it out will change the mood of some of the people there.

My advice… keep your eye open for great images but don’t worry if you dont get them…leave your camera at home and enjoy life.
