Day 1
Camera control
One of the most challenging parts of capturing any image is the control of how much light is exposed to the CCD in the camera.
Modern Camera have many controls with strange abbreviations ( ISO, AV, TV etc) What do they all mean?
This is not a replacement for the manual…more like a translation of the manual.
How to balance different camera settings to produce the desired results is the topic of this module.
Topics to be dealt with include:
- The correct exposure vs the right exposure
- The histogram and how to read it
- Middle gray and why it is so important
- Different exposure modes and when to use them
Bring your camera, your light meter (if you have one) and your manual !

Quality Settings
There are many different quality settings on your camera. What settings should you use for what purposes. The quality setting you use for Aunt Gertuides birthday may be different then what you will want for a once in a life time trip down the Amazon.
Day 2
Â
Understanding exposure along with understanding focus can be where the art of photography starts to develop
Composition
What is the difference between a snap shot and a photograph. There are basic concepts of composition that can improve most images.
This moduale ties together all the other modules and how to use what you have learned to start creating photographs and not snapshots.
Rule of thirds
Â
Depth of field
Selective focus and depth of field
The control of what parts of the image are in and out of focus can make or break an image. A sports image may look best if it is tack sharp, while a portrait of a loved one may work best with parts of the image falling off into softness and moodeness
Techniques for controling the sharpness, or lack of sharpness are the topics of this module.
Â
Lens selection
Some times it is better to move away and use a more powerful lens…. we will talk about why.
Â
What do you do with your images
What do you do with your images after you have shot them?
Having 400 images on your camera is great but how do you print them? Send them by email?Â
This moduale discusses printing, the internet, storage, cataloging and minor image manipulation of your images.
