“Do you still think of yourself as a studio shooter?”

I posted some of my images on Facebook and this was one of the comments.

A bit of backstory.

I had been commenting for years how I was a studio shooter and really disliked the results I get while shooting in the streets.

My outside shots were just taking studio techniques and moving them out of doors.

I have always admired street shooters….I just had never been able to “see” it.

I think this might be changing.

There is still a lot for me to learn, but I think I am starting to get a feel for the image developing…to visualize the shot…before all the elements come into place.

I spend a lot of time and effort on pre-visualizing… getting the backgound, set and lighting just right… when I have the time and control that the studio offers.

The ability to start to see the “decisive moment” developing on the street, were I have no control, is exciting, and very difficult.

I Just wish I could do it on demand.

This might be caused by the fact I have not been in a studio for months.

There is an expression that “if all you have is a hammer then everything looks like a nail”….maybe since I now just have the streets of Tokyo as my visual stimulus, my brain is getting wired that way?

I still don’t consider myself a street shooter, but I now get a few hits along with my many misses. Maybe some day…… –
