Smiles

A close friend of mine, Anthony, has a sister who is going through a really rough time right now.

Sophia’s blog is very poignant and can tug at the heart strings…she is a great writer

In a recent blog she mentioned how shuttered and closed Torontonians are on the TTC.

I think that is the same in most places in the world… We all put up our guard, our public face, when we are surrounded by strangers.

Not sure why we need to live behind a shield, but we do. It is the same in Tokyo.

But I have found a way to break through… By smiling first.

I have been told that eye contact is rare in Tokyo. I seem to be an exception. I get eye contact all the time, young, old, women, men, kids.

It may because I am an older blue eyed guy… Not sure.

I find if I smile, I get smiles back… Not all the time, but enough that it is worth doing.

I seem to break through the shield of some people every day.

I also have stopped wearing a hat. I have found that I get more “positive” reaction without it. Not sure what to do about protecting my thinning scalp from the sun…maybe a different style of hat that doesn’t shade my eyes? The fedora seems to be fashionable here, so maybe….. what do you think…the Frank Sinatra look?
