I am a big fan of multiple light sources.
The shadowing ( or modeling) provides depth to images. The shadows help lead the eye through an image to provide a more vibrant or alive image.
These images are example where there were a minimum 3 light sources.
1 on camera flash, usually acting as fill.
1 off camera flash, balancing between main and key.
the sun usually acts as key ( or kicker or hi key or backlight or whatever term you use)
Reflections from the sun can also act as fills or main lights. It is all about analyzing and balancing your light sources.
This image was produced in open shade of a building, with bright sun on the roof behind.
The flash on a stick ( with umbrella) was camera left…difusser on on camera flash dialed down 3/4 of a stop ( i think)
This image was shot with a flash on a stick camera left, balancing sun camera right…fill on camera shooting just as the cops pulled up with their lights flashing. We walked away quickly….or as quickly as somone in a Kimono can walk.{jcomments on}
