The “reviewers” on micro stock sites that make that final decision as to which images are accepted and which ones are not accepted are NOT trained professionals. The review team of every micro stock agency is made up from members of the contributor population. With most agencies the only qualification required is to have a minimum number of images accepted into the collection (250-500 on average) and a computer and Internet connection along with a willingness to donate your time or at best accept a pay rate on a commission level of 2-3 cents per image reviewed. Most who become reviewers do so for the EGO of it. It is a predominately anonymous position but one that offers a feeling of great power to many. If you were to see the portfolios of many of the individuals making the decisions as to if your image is worthy of inclusion into the collection you would likely be amazed and even appalled in many cases.
It is a job that provides a multitude of opportunities for abuse of power and I assure you those abuses occur regularly and go largely unchecked.
I have not had a big issue with what has been accepted and rejected ( for the most part) As I start refining what I submit, and maybe start shooting for this market then it might become an issue.
When I look at the hours I have put in (30+) and the expected return (0.02) it doesn’t look profitable, and except for the therapy value I have to question this market.
I do know some people who make $100 to $200 a month from this… enough for a nice diner in Las Vegas… but enough to cover my rent and food for a month in Ecuador. The big question is, do I have the images to generate this income?
