I have been having conversations with a gentleman about religion….Buddhism in particular.
What he was telling me about the tenets of the belief system really had my curiosity peaked.. He invited me to a ceremony Thursday and I accepted.
There are 2 types of Buddhist temples ( so it was explained to me)… Exoteric and esoteric.
Exoteric are the public temples, were people have weddings, funerals, and are open to all, so that you can offer gifts in exchange for the granting of wishes.
Esoteric are closed to people except those who are members or guests of members.
The temple we went to was of the second type.
I was very disappointed.
Out of respect for people who want and need the type of worship service it was, I will not comment except to say, I have been to similar services in many other denomination’s churches… Thou this is the first one I had to pay an entrance fee and submit my name and phone number.
I know that some people have a need for ceremony… For a constant….for a sense of belonging that comes with organized religion.
I have seen the happiness and well being this brings to many people. My issue ( and has been my issue since I was 16) has been the human factor, the human conflict, the better then thou attitude, I know better then you because i have seen the way, that seems to thrive in organizations such as this.
For me, the teachings always get lost in the surrounding trappings.
I don’t think I have given up on my information gathering about Buddhism, or Shinto… But I don’t see me being a member of a church, temple, or cult in the foreseeable future….. It just isn’t me.
