I don’t know where my camera (g9(small point and shoot))is.
I have a rough idea ( likely either in my MEC bag or in my big blue camera bag)
But I don’t have it with me. I have not brought it out in days.
I am more interested in experiencing what is happening…as opposed to trying to capture it.
I still have things I want to capture, but I want to take photographs, not snap shots.
I feel like I am less of a tourist, and more of a visitor… ( not sure what the distinction is, but there is one…at least in my brain.)
Things like, I know when I walk down “this” street, I am going to harassed by Africians who want me to rent their girls ( or their bosses girls).
I have my own way of dealing with them…. let them know at the start that I am not interested…they are wasting their time. If they persist ( which some do) I shake their hands start talking to them in my best insurance salesman voice and try and sell them on the idea that they need life insurance…or ask them if they have found Jesus…or such lines. It is reaching the point that I can now walk to my dance class, and they will smile, nod their heads but leave me alone.
Also I now understand that the first thing you do in a cafe is find your seat. Once you have found it, you can leave something on the seat ( or table) to hold it.
Tokyo is the only major city I know where people will walk in… leave their purses, bags, shopping, by a seat right next to the door..go to the toilet, grab a coffee and snack… and come back knowing that their items will not be touched.
You can tell the tourists by their not doing this. They line up with all their worldly possessions in tow, and then search for a seat….
I guess I am part way there…I will leave my bag ( cell phones, computer, shopping) but not my cameras…. I can trust people..but only so far.
