The whole system is owned by several different companies… Â you have to pay on each train you take.
This means an entrance fee  of 160 yen each time you transfer. And so much per station ( i think) Since there are so many routes there may be more then one way to get from a to b. You have to decide what is the shortest, and what is the cheapest route.Â
They may not be the same combination of routes. You can buy tickets for each ride… or use a smart card that you load with funds.
There are smart phone apps that show you how to go and cost to get there. And if the timetable says it leaves at 13:46, it does. Not 13:47.Â
There are markings on the platform that show you where the doors will be when the train arrives… And I have not seen it wrong yet. The cars feel smaller the Toronto’s subway cars( the system I am most used to).Â
It is interesting how the door ” dance” differs. In Toronto people say excuse and let you move out of the way. In Tokyo, when the doors open, if you are in the way, people will shoulder you towards the door, or out of the way…the first time I experienced this was completely unexpected and I almost got swept away.Â
